Joint industry letter on battery substance labelling
EUROBAT has co-signed a joint letter with RECHARGE – European Association of the Advanced Rechargeable & Lithium Batteries Value Chain and 10 other industry associations urging the European Commission to correct the direction of the Environmental Omnibus negotiations on battery substance labelling.
The Omnibus is meant to simplify EU legislation and reduce administrative burden while protecting the environment and human health.
Current discussions risk doing the opposite, by widening the scope of substances subject to labelling and adding uncertainty and obligations across complex battery supply chains.
📢 We call on the Commission to:
🔹 Establish the REACH SVHC definition as the basis for battery substance labelling.
🔹 Reject broader or competing definitions based on CLP hazardous substances or ESPR Substances of Concern.
🔹 Restore the simplification objective with clear, proportionate and workable obligations for battery manufacturers and their suppliers.
At a time when Europe is seeking to strengthen its battery industry, attract clean-tech investment and improve competitiveness, regulatory simplification must deliver on its promise.
